- Introducing the Ishikawa – Kanazawa Bio-cultural Region -

United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is one of 13 institutes and programmes located in 12 different countries, which together form the United Nations University (UNU) — a global think tank and postgraduate teaching organisation based in Tokyo. Its mission is to improve efforts towards a more sustainable future through policy-oriented research and capacity development focused on sustainability and its social-economic and environmental dimensions.

UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa / Kanazawa (OUIK) is a unique project based in Kanazawa which focuses on the sustainable utilisation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The project is supported by the local governments of the Ishikawa prefecture and the City of Kanazawa.
The research activities of the project are focused on three areas: Satoyama and Satoumi (SAS), Sustainable Primary Industries (SPI), and Cities and Biodiversity (CAB).

To celebrate the UCCN Meeting Kanazawa 2015, OUIK will be holding a symposium on the links between biodiversity and cultural diversity within Kanazawa City and Ishikawa Prefecture.
